Recently when I went shopping, I saw a lot of girls clicking
selfies completely oblivious of the surroundings. I was relieved because I
thought I was being weird and narcissistic by clicking my own pictures all day.
However for most guys this is something they don’t comprehend. Why blame them
when even our spelling godfather Microsoft Word does not get it! I just want to say …Dude we depend on you for
all our spellings…update yourself!
Well for all those husbands/boyfriends/brothers/fathers out
there who don’t understand what a selfie is, here are some insights.
A selfie is a self-portrait. Like you most
probably believe, we DID NOT invent this word; it was included in the Oxford Dictionary
from year 2013.
We do not ask you to click our pictures anymore,
and torment or embarrass you. When we are clicking a selfie, if you feel embarrassed
you can just move out of the frame and act like a stranger. We will be really grateful.
Most selfies are taken in restrooms. This is
because corporate and mall restrooms are well lit. Do not complain, as you are
probably waiting somewhere checking out some hot chics, or in the worst case inquiring when Apple is releasing the next iphone.
A selfie is harmless. It hardly costs anything.
We don’t even send our selfies to you.
You may think why we need a selfie when there
are mirrors everywhere. You are not expected to understand this.
With selfies there is no dearth of profile pictures.
Almost anyone looks like a celebrity in selfies.
Selfies relieve us from stress and uplifts our
confidence like no other.
It is the most loved feel-good activity, after
shopping and cupcakes.
It is foolish to think that women who click a
lot of selfies are self-obsessed. Yeah we are, but it is still foolish to think
like that.
If we
click a lot of selfies it doesn’t mean that we are selfless.
Selfies
are not clicked only when we are wearing something new. Even a school uniform
is reason enough.
Selfie
experts can pose like it was Dabboo Ratnani who clicked them by not showing
their extended hands which holds the phone. This is no ordinary feat.
A good
selfie involves some financial risk . Chances of the phone
falling down when we are adjusting our hair cannot be ruled out. It is not a child's play, and moreover, it is not silly.
A
selfie that turned out very well may not even need to go under the editing
knife! It is a real time saver!
Selfies
with friends rejuvenates friendship and keeps memories alive. We do not lose
patience if we have to click countless pictures just to make sure everyone looks good. When everyone agrees on one, that is one of those moments when we have bonded for life.
So next time she takes a selfie at the
mall, or takes more time at the restroom, you know what to do. Just stop asking
and keep walking.
For me, selfies are only important in a trial room - when I need to send my pic to the hubby so that he can't say 'What are you wearing?' ! I hate FB selfies. Self obsession in moderation is fine; but there are some who are oblivious of the truth and think they are God's prettiest invention :p
ReplyDeleteSelfies can be taken anytime and any number of times... But it should not be used to flood the timelines of others! I take Selfies for myself.
DeleteAnd I was of the opinion the men are obsessed with selfies! I have taken selfie only two or three times that too actual intention was to take my baby's snap with me not just self :)... my husband takes at least 2 selfies a day but Thank fully he doesn't post them in fb.. And whether it be family, friends or colleagues, I have actually seen more selfies of men !
ReplyDeleteSeena
Wow that's news to me! My husband doesn't even know what a selfie is..he is a photography enthusiast and there is no dearth of our sons pics. As for me I love my Selfies!!
DeleteTill date I have taken but three selfies. None of which I have had the will to show another living soul. I don't know, it just makes me feel very self-obsessed and vain when I take my own picture...
ReplyDeleteNo need to feel that way...and there is no need to exhibit it as well! I have like n number of Selfies one or two used as whatsapp profile pics..and the rest are seen only by me...!
Deletegeheheheheheheheh!!!! My current real life display image on facebook is a selfie...taken with a "DABOO RATNANI" feel. No extended hands nothing!!! And it was taken on a balcony , so could have lost the phone!
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS NO ORDINARY FEAT!
Hhahahah Loved this post!! Going to share it on my page :)
Thanks a ton Red!! :-D
DeleteHahaha eye opening post for quite a few! I agree with Nisha on this. Selfies are only a must in the trial room, others I feel is super self-obsessed! When I have a husband to click, I do not see the need of a selfie :P
ReplyDeleteMine is a photography enthusiast but I love my Selfies! I have them not just in trial room but I don't think I'm self obsessed because I don't publish them or expect anyone to comment! It's just for me!!!
DeleteLol....such an interesting read. Loved it. I have one more point to add -- Selfies add a ton of fun to mommie-kiddo together times too!!! :D
ReplyDeleteYes! Exactly! With kiddo in good mood Selfies work best!
DeleteSelfies? I do not know what it is. :( But I love your faultless English and that makes me happy !!! :(
ReplyDeletePapa
Thanks a lot Papa... Selfies are self portraits.
Deletehave taken selfies myself though heaven knows why.. i never fit in the pic unless i stretch my arms far away from my body!!
ReplyDeleteLoved that pic u attached.. so true, na !
Lol!!!
DeleteAnd I.love that pic about moon and restroom.. So true!! :-D
A guide? It looks like a 'Selfie chalisa' or a 'Selfie anthem', everyone (I mean ladies) would love it.
ReplyDeleteBut, err, I'm sorry to tell you this but because people used it so often, it was inducted in the Oxford dictionary in the year 2013 as a valid word and not because it was (but now is) a valid word did people use it.
:D
Cheers,
Blasphemous Aesthete
HAha yeah BA, there are a lot of words out there used by people 'outside' the dictionary. But it doesnt mean that it will make it to the dictionary some day ! Also, it doesn't matter whether the word is out there or not...we will still use it :D :D
DeleteI just love being on the other side of the camera and I totally envy those who can take their selfies beautifully. I really dont know how to look good in them..
ReplyDeleteTry, try and try !!! There is nothing like it !
DeleteI am aware of the word "Selfie" but wasnt aware that Oxford has recognized it too! Dont you feel Oxford is lowering the bar every now and then?
ReplyDeleteNo I dont think so Binu ! GRR ! :D
DeleteI loved this post! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks dee ! <3
DeleteI always feel so conscious when taking a selfie!
ReplyDeleteSelfie is something which you click of yourself and noone can see unless you prefer to show it. So there is no need to be self conscious !
DeleteI was not used to take selfies..but now a days I click a few to share with my better half as she is not here with me..:)
ReplyDeleteSo now you have got a chance to become a pro in that !
DeleteThis is my first visit to your blog but have started to love it from this post itself :)
ReplyDeleteNicely penned and a very thoughtful post.
